Fieldtrip Rotterdam
Rotterdam claims to be the innovation capital of the Netherlands. Even though it is nog official it is interesting to look in to. The so called innovation capital could be the lion’s den for upcoming trends.
To find out more I went to the city. The first place I went to was the world museum. The museum was divided in different regions: Tibet, Japan, China, Indonesia and Oceania. They each have their own stories and are equally interesting. It had been a will since I went to a museum. The reason for it is that a museum used to have a one way communication line. It displayed pieces with information and that was it. In my opinion there was no fun in it. The world museum has a different approach. They really want to create an experience. To begin with the audio tour. Everywhere you look there are connection points. At the beginning of the tour you get a device that connect to these points. You can choose what information you would like to hear. There is a rather friendly voice that tells you about the specific area or item. Besides the audio tour they play music typical for that specific region. They address to every sense. Even your smellng sense.
I asked the receptionist what the museum has to do with innovation. She confirmed my suspicion. The museum itself is presenting the pieces in a different way, by using light in a special way and creating an experience. She also gave me her perspective on things. She believed that the pieces are a beginning of something. There has to be something to begin with to create something new. She said that we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for these beginnings. By showing the pieces perhaps we realize the importance of it.
The second place I went was ‘de markthal’. Ever since it was build I wanted to go there. It is an art piece, a housing area and food market all in one.
I went in open minded and didn’t know what I would see. It turns out it is not only has a unique design. It even takes care of nature. It has swallow and bat homes built in to it. The building and the people even generates power for the city. That is very interesting. The thing that amazed me the most is something a lot smaller. It was a coconut. The image I have form it is a hard, brown skin and a white stuffing. With milk of course. The coconuts they had in ‘de markthal’ were completely different from that. I included a picture underneath. I had seen the coconut before. I just didn’t make the connection with the image in my head.
I realized my brain doesn’t always work like I think it does. Sometimes it does not make a logical connection. So we look at something but don’t always see it.
